Bertan Özerdağ
President of the Supreme Court

Bertan Özerdağ was born on 24 May 1974 in Nicosia. In 1992 he graduated from Nicosia Türk Maarif College and in 1996 he graduated from Marmara University Faculty of Law. He studied European Union and International Commercial Law for master’s degree at the University of Essex in England in 1998-1999 and obtained his master’s degree on European Union Competition Law subsequent to his studies.

In 1995, he participated in the Philip C. Jessup Moot Court Competition, the world’s most important event for law students during his education at Marmara University, and took part in the team representing Marmara University in the competition held in the United States of America.

 

Completing his internship on law on 5 October 2000, he started practicing as a lawyer. From 2000 to 2006, he pursued his occupation as a lawyer. While pursuing his occupation as a lawyer, he served as a member of the Nicosia Local Bar Association and the TRNC Bar Council. He ensured the publication of the Bar Journal by the Nicosia Local Bar Association and served as a member of the editorial board of the journal.

During the Annan Plan negotiations carried out by the United Nations for a comprehensive settlement to the Cyprus problem, he undertook the task of committee chairperson in the subcommittee c representing the TRNC State and ensured that 55 Federal Laws were made within the 131 Federal Laws annexed to the Annan Plan.

He participated in seminars and trainings organised by the Academy of European Law and the European University Institute in the fields of criminal law, technology law, competition law and similar fields, conducted academic studies and published articles. He took part in the 1st programme of the ENTraNCE programme in the field of Competition Law organised at the European Union level and prepared and presented an article on TRNC Competition Law. 

He was among the experts who drafted the first draft convention (Draft Convention on Electronic Evidence) on the status of electronic evidence, covering civil and criminal cases at the University of London International Advance Legal Studies. He was appointed as a District Court Judge on 1 June 2006, a Senior District Court Judge on 1 October 2010, a President to District Court on 16 September 2014 and a Supreme Court Judge on 16 November 2015. During his term of office as a Supreme Court Judge, he served as the President and member of the Court of Appeal and as a member of the Constitutional Court. He served as a member of the Supreme Election Council, as a member of the Council of Law and as a member of the Council of Prosecutors.

On 16 May 2024, Bertan Özerdağ was appointed as the President of the Supreme Court by the Supreme Council of Judicature. He is currently serving as the President of the Supreme Court, the President of the Supreme Council of Judicature and the President of the Supreme Election Council.

Bertan Özerdağ, who speaks English fluently, is married and has 2 children.
